As of January 4, 2010, ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors, and skylights will meet new performance levels. It will still be easy to find high-efficiency products: just look for the ENERGY STAR label.

In the next few months, you will see two new labels to help you choose windows, doors, or skylights for your home:

Starting October 1, 2009, you might see the label shown on the right, in red or in black, in combination with ENERGY STAR product labels. This label identifies high-efficiency products that currently qualify for the ENERGY STAR but will not meet the more stringent requirements that go into full effect April 1, 2010.

The other new label helps you find products that are eligible for the federal tax credit of up to $1,500. The label to the left, already visible in stores today, tells you the product qualifies for ENERGY STAR and is also eligible for the tax credit.

I ran across this interesting tool for the building industry today. It is called GeoEstimator and can save you time and money preparing quotes for roof shingle replacement.

GeoEstimator provides roof measurements based on aerial and satellite imagery. These images work with GeoEstimator’s software to determine the correct correlation between the image size and actual size. Using these figures our staff is able to create drawings with accurate calculations of roof area, lineal footage of ridge, valley, perimeter and step flashing. Once the drawing is complete, you will download the file in our End User software on your computer or laptop. Your drawing is then easily adjusted in our proprietary software to accommodate any changes, if needed.

You get paid when you put on a roof, not when you measure a roof. Why not outsource that unprofitable activity to someone who can measure a roof less expensively than you can do it yourself?
