I have been in the building industry for over 22 years and most product performance complaints are a result of improper installation or misinformation. When it comes to exterior doors you may want to know a few of the common callback complaints before you begin your project.

• Water/Air Leakage – Failure to caulk between the sill and sub-floor can lead to leakage, as can not shimming behind lock area, failure to install corner seal pads and a sill adjusted too low.

• Dented Door During construction – Steel doors are famous for denting during construction. I recommend fiberglass doors on all garage entry doors which are the most used door in most homes. Fiberglass doors are able to withstand a considerably higher force without denting than steel. 

• Door Does not operate Properly – Most often, ill-fitting doors are due to the door not being hung according to instructions, including not replacing temporary shipping screws with the longer permanent screws.

Before ordering or even pricing an exterior door there are a few questions you need to answer. Here is the basic list of things your door supplier will need from you.

1. What type of material? Wood,Steel or fiberglass
2. What is the door size? Usually 32″ or 36″
3. What is the jamb size? Usually 4-9/16″ or 6-9/16″
4. What color hinge do you want?
5. Will you be using a deadbolt for your lock set?
6. Do you want an adjustable sill also known as (threshold)?
7. If you choose fiberglass, will you paint or stain the door?

Guys who are currently using these report that they can hang 3 doors to 1 time wise, and need to use less skilled personnel to hang the doors.
